Everyone had though of using nuclear batteries as a source of energy in the past, this though has now become a reality as research engineers at the University of Missouri has developed a battery that uses radioactive elements to provide electricity.

Health sector, space programs and military equipment have been using nuclear batteries in the past, now we would be able to use this powerful source of energy for our household accessories, mobile phones and other electronic equipment.

Jae Kwon of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of Missouri University and other researchers have been developing the radioisotope battery, which has the size and thickness of a penny.

Kwon said the technology is safe. According to him, “Nuclear power sources have already been safely powering a variety of devices, such as pacemakers, space satellites and underwater systems”.

The nuclear battery is quite sophisticated in design, it produces power from charged particles released by radioactive decay, and instead of using solid semiconductor material, it is designed to use the liquid one, which makes this battery safer to use.
