How To Maintain Your Windows XP

Everyone desires their computers to be efficient , responsive and fast. When it boots with slow speed, the people get annoy at it. We need to give it some care. We are providing some maintenance tips which will help you to make your Windows XP computer faster.

1 – Turn off Remote Desktop and Remote Assistance

Remote Desktop service makes it possible for the people to access your computer remotely. But there is always a danger for you that hackers may access your computer. If your PC is not part of a network, it’s best to turn them off. Here’s how:

  • Go to Start ‚Äì Settings ‚Äì Control Panel
  • Double-click the System icon
  • Select the Remote tab
  • Uncheck Allow Remote Assistance invitations to be sent from this computer
  • In the same tab click Advanced
  • Uncheck Allow users to connect remotely to this computer
  • Click Apply, then click OK

 

2 – Run Windows XP chkdsk program

Windows XP chkdsk is a tool which will scan the disk for errors, fix logical errors, detect and mark bad sectors, so that Windows will no longer try to use them. By using this utility you can prevent your computer from becoming unstable.

To run Check Disk do this:

  • Find the My Computer icon on your desktop and double-click it
  • Find the disk you want to check, right-click it and go to Properties
  • In the Properties dialog box go to Tools
  • Click Check now
  • A new dialog box will appear, check both options and click Start
  • Most likely you will get a message that Check Disk wants exclusive access to the disk and wants to start right after your reboot. Click OK
  • Restart your computer

 

3- Reduce recycle bin size

As hard disks are very large, so the default 10% disk for the Recycle Bin is too much. It should be from 2 to 5% of the hard drive space.

To reduce the size of your Recycle Bin do the following:

  • Go to Desktop
  • Right‚Äìclick on the Recycle Bin icon
  • Select Properties
  • Use the slider to choose the required percentage
  • Click Apply, then click OK

 

4 – Defrag regularly for fast performance

Windows has a built in Disk Defragmenter. To use it

  • go to Start ‚Äì Programs ‚Äì Accessories ‚Äì System Tools ‚Äì Disk Defragmenter.

Like any other defrag utility it gathers file fragments that are scattered all over your disk and writes them into adjacent clusters.
